From Complex File to Physical Artwork
Guttestreker creates highly detailed digital artworks composed of thousands of individual elements. My role is to translate these complex files into unique physical works through technical file preparation, custom heightmaps, precision cutting, layered printing and final delivery.
Guttestreker’s artworks begin as exceptionally complex digital files built from thousands of visual elements. My responsibility is to transform those files into finished physical pieces while preserving the original detail, composition and colour. The process combines advanced prepress, custom heightmap development, vector contour creation, CNC routing and multi-stage printing. Each artwork is produced on 2 mm D-bond, cut to its unique outer shape and then returned to the printer for precise alignment and layered production. The result is not a conventional flat print, but a tactile, custom-shaped artwork where digital image-making, material engineering and physical production become one complete object.
From digital complexity to physical form
Guttestreker’s artworks begin as highly detailed digital compositions containing thousands of individual elements. My responsibility is to take the completed artwork and develop a reliable production process that preserves its visual complexity while transforming it into a tactile, custom-shaped physical object. This involves technical interpretation, file preparation, heightmap development, vector contour creation, CNC routing, precise registration and several stages of elevated printing.
01 — Preparing the artwork
The original artwork requires careful technical preparation before production can begin. I inspect scale, resolution, colour, edges and fine details, then adapt the file to the physical dimensions and limitations of the material and print system. The objective is to retain the richness of the original artwork without introducing technical weaknesses later in production.
02 — Building the heightmap
I create a custom heightmap that controls where the tactile relief is built and how the surface develops across the artwork. This is not an automatic conversion of light and dark values. The heightmap must be interpreted and adjusted manually so that the physical structure supports the composition, important details and visual hierarchy.

The final contour is developed in Photoshop and refined as a production-ready vector path in Illustrator.
The artwork is then CNC-routed from 2 mm D-bond using this contour. Because the routed panel later returns to the printer, the physical shape, dimensions and digital production files must correspond precisely.
The routed panel is carefully positioned back in the printer and aligned with the production files.
The tactile structure and colour artwork are built through several separate print stages. Registration is critical: the heightmap, colour image and routed outer shape must remain precisely aligned throughout the process.
